ManageEngine’s Cloud promise — $5/device/month (Hidden costs of bandwidth & storage excluded!)

By Tarry Singh at 9 March, 2009, 11:39 am

So no promise thus but some hidden traps and little figures that will trap you unless you can get out of the trap within one month. Do remember the hell we all have had to go through to buy those sleek apple iPhones and Nokias and get ripped with the bandwidth, mms and all other crappy costs. I have hated the guts of firms like Vodafone etc who have literally screwed up my monthly budget with the trap offerings of $0.0* p.m with costs of 27 p.m that jumped to 55 to 70 pm the minute I touched the device.

Same thing might happen in Cloud as well. Here’s the news on ManageEngine:

ManageEngine has over 32,000 users and a web-site boasting a “90:10 promise” referring to offering “90% of the features of the big four [network and server management software vendors] at 10% of the price”. This cloud computing approach should go a lot further than that on price.

“It is a perfect fit for a new business,” Rajesh Ganesan, director of managed services at ManageEngine, told me. “You pay for what you use at $5 a device. 100 devices means $500 a month. It is outsourced to experts.” (However, he added that there would be additional charging for higher bandwidth and storage usage.)

Businesses’ immediate savings will come from obviating the need to purchase and provision servers and storage hardware and applications, or to take time installing and configuring them. Thereafter all the potential disruption of implementing new software versions or patches will disappear—along with the time to diagnose and remedy infrastructure problems. So it is a safe bet some staff skills will no longer be needed.

Hi Tarry. Thanks for the coverage.

I would like to make a small clarification on your article. There are no hidden costs. The charge for bandwidth and storage usage would come into place only if it crosses a certain threshold. It definitely does not mean that we will be charging every customer these charges. (Ideally, I would think it would come into play for very large networks and organizations). Your everyday SMB is not going to be affected by this.

We have built ManageEngine as a low-cost IT management software (20+ products) vendor for the last so many years. Our greatest strength is the fact that we do not have any sort of hidden charges within the system. In fact, we are one of the few vendors who publish our prices on our website and put our products for free download. 32,000 customers could not go wrong. :)

Thanks
