VMware launches partner innovation program with Open Source offerings!

Desktop virtualisation is in its infancy, but is increasingly popular owing to its ‘low-cost, on-demand, secure, green IT’ positioning. With this move, VMware is helping the market to mature and is rightfully extending its influence over it by building on its strength as a server virtualisation technology provider.

The open sourcing of VOC is intended to:

* attract new partners to VMware’s VDI offering - not just device manufacturers but also partners with cloud-based clients or desktop-as-a service offerings, for example
* expand the number of devices that can connect to a VMware View server.

Partners will be able to take the VOC code and adapt it to the needs of new types of:

* device form factors: not just traditional thin-client devices but also mobile handheld devices and smartphones. This feeds into VMware’s vClient Initiative that aims to enable users to access their data from a variety of devices. VMware itself reached out to mobile phones late last year when it announced a specific hypervisor for release in 2009
* processors (besides Intel ones): ARM is the most obvious candidate
* operating systems (besides Windows and Linux) such as Solaris desktops, or mobile operating systems such as Windows Mobile and Google’s Android (since the open sourced VOC code is housed by the Google Code site, some expect tighter links between the two companies - this is likely).

The increased choice, in terms of both partners and devices, and the innovations around the new devices will not just benefit VMware but also its customers.
