How on earth can you ever validate the high initial investments when it comes to this large scale. BRIC is opening up faster than you can imagine. I have been yelling for quite a while about it. I have been involved in international projects, purely CSER driven where we just don’t have that kind of money to invest in heavy duty stuff VDI stuff. Similar stories are heard in India where I only heard of c oncepts such as “Hot Seats” in IT sweatshops, “Moving Monitors” in classes and saloons etc.

All these innovative solutions, all Linux driven are spreading massively across the BRIC and other emerging economies. So the catch obviously is to tap on the internet and the power that it will unleash when all those millions of people will be connected to the Cloud.

The revolution has already begun, while the rest of the world is still having all the boys from B-schools do the math and see if any wealth is left to spend in the First World, the future would be stolen by the 2nd, 3rd and all other worlds.

Here’s the story from Brazil:

Userful, ThinNetworks, and Positivo announced that they had been selected to supply 324,000 virtualised desktops to schools in all of Brazil’s 5,560 municipalities.

This initiative would provide computer access to millions of children throughout Brazil. It is a historical achievement being: the world’s largest ever virtual desktop deployment; the world’s largest ever desktop Linux deployment; and a new record low-cost for PCs with the PC sharing hardware and software costing less than $50 per seat.

The decision to deploy Userful’s low-cost and environmentally friendly solution established the Brazilian Ministry of Education as a global leader in educational computing and provides other governments and institutions with a proven model for improving student to computer ratios while rolling out large numbers of desktops with minimal cost and environmental impact.

Userful and ThinNetworks would be providing the desktop virtualisaiton and PC sharing software and hardware while Positivo would provid PCs and services. This is the third phase of a nation-wide rollout of computers in schools. Userful and Thin-networks have been selected for all three phases. The first phase (19,000 desktops) has already been installed .
