VMworld Europe 2009: VMware expects over 5000 attendees!

My serious advice to EMEA market is that they should not miss out the virtualization event in Cannes this year more than ever. Why? Well you will not find any one hanging around at VMworld. Not this year. All firms that are sending out their folks to VMworld are pretty serious about their business. No more  free trips because employees that have to stay back [meaning ones that were lucky enough not asked to leave] and do not belong to the group that is being let go, will have to do more and more with a lot less. That is where virtualization comes in.

Obviously it is unfortunate that such an economic climate has begun its process of cleansing where the financial markets have experienced a serious blow. Did you ever wonder why it all happened? I have applied for a speaker slot myself and I have found out the answer which I will reveal in my security session at VMworld, should VMworld committee choose not to ignore my session. But the short answer to my posed question is: Excesses! Too much toxic products and too much false hopes. So you see a lot of “too much” that returned “way too little”.

Now turn around and walk into your data center and also take a look at that excel sheet [with all those software licenses] that is being used in multiple instances, returning you [something which you've heard as ROI] almost nothing back. Isn’t this  excess? This [aggregation imperative using Virtualization/Cloud Computing] must be done, not because you have to but it is the wise choice to do so.

And  to address the: “Why then should I go to VMworld? OR “Why should I send my employee(s) to VMworld?

Well? Consider this:

  • Experience and share you pain and sucesses with the peers: We need each other in this community. We need to help each other understand that there are truly better and smarter ways of working.
  • Learn and get the truth out yourself when you meet the vendors: Do they reall yahave the products they claim to have. Can they really do everything they promised on the web? Drill them and get it all out for you.
  • Virtualization/Cloud Computing  view “update”: Virtualization is changing dramatically and you have to stay on top of it. Ask them to demonstrate and get your views about the firms “updated”.
  • Cloud Computing – The New Deal: It is coming in a big way. I have followed two of the Cloud trainings from VMware and they do look promising. VMware is offering a Private Cloud Concept which can be very attractive to the firms that are not yet excited about the “all too open” Public Clouds. Very interesting, I have also asked for a slot through my Avastu Blog perspective, where I’d like to talk about the “Servicization and Solutionization of Cloud Computing” for both Public, Private and Hybrid Clouds. Anyways, it will be very interesting. You wouldn’t want to miss it.
  • Virtualization talks are getting bigger, economy may be in a downward spiral, where do you want to be when there is an upturn. With Virtualization, your future may very wel lbe secured.
  • Meet mad men like me, David Marshall [I hope he's coming] and other bloggers who have been prophesizing for way quite a while. I may also tell you and give you a sneak peak of my new book [which is underway and expected to release in Q2/Q3 2009. David has written some excellent book, his latest one being : VMware ESX Essentials in the Virtual Data Center, a great read.
  • Second Last but not least: Go home enriched with realtime information on virtualization trends and Cloud Computing.
  • Lastly "Reassessing Assessment & Risk" : When you're home, please really really do something about your environment.  As a real world example: A real world example now and as fresh as today, I saw a customer, who wants us to virtualize some 400 odd servers, that they had recently purchased some 100 odd servers, all had hw-assist virtualization, meaning Intel VTx/AMD V enabled. Allwaiting to be virtualized, and what was happening there? Nothing at all. Absolutely nothing. They could not only consolidate, here they could also save a huge pile of cash by dramatically reducing the TCA! Can you imagine? So please have some independent party do some honest assessment for you. This time it is different, trust me!

Good luck and hope to see you guys in Cannes.

Here's some news on VMworld's line up:

VMworld Europe 2009 will build on the success of the first VMworld Europe conference, which more than 4,500 delegates attended. This year, VMware is expecting more than 5,000 attendees at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes between 24-26 February. The event has rapidly become Europe's largest virtualization forum. Alongside these nine Platinum sponsors, nearly 70 other exhibitors have confirmed their participation, bringing innovative virtualization offerings to the event, as well as a strong presence from vendors with traditional networking, storage, applications and security expertise.

"The first VMworld Europe was a significant landmark for both VMware and the wider virtualization community," said Reza Malekzadeh, EMEA Senior Director of Products and Marketing. "The broad support for this year's conference, characterized by the impressive list of Platinum sponsors, demonstrates the extent to which virtualization technology has been accepted as a standard part of the IT infrastructure, whether it is being used to deliver IT services in the datacenter, on the desktop or through the cloud. VMworld conferences have become synonymous with technological innovation, thought leadership and a sense of excitement at the transformative nature of virtualization and VMworld Europe 2009 is on course to continue this tradition."
